about
I wrote this song, "Rochelle's Sparrows", in the Spring of 2018 when I was living in New Rochelle, a suburb of New York City. There was a bird's nest right outside my east-facing bedroom window, so every morning I would wake up to loudly chirping birds and obnoxiously abundant sunlight. The A section's flowing melody represents the birds, and the B section's intensity represents the overpowering sun.
The tune features the Max Gerl Trio, which is Paul Cornish on piano, Mike Mitchell on drums, and yours truly on acoustic bass. My favorite aspects of this recording are the way that Paul shapes the melody, adding a little bit more of his own musical personality to it each time we play the theme, and the chemistry of the trio. Paul and Mike are incredibly perceptive listeners, and the directions that we are able to take the music in are fluid and unpredictable, yet not arbitrary. I hope you enjoy Rochelle's Sparrows!

Described as “an ecological history of humanity,” this sparse, tense suite of songs perfectly balances melody and chaos. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 28, 2018
